This Month’s Meeting

Our monthly meeting will be Tuesday, February 9th at 7:00 pm. All are welcome! Please join us! Bring a friend! We will meet at Holiday Ham for dinner at 5:30. Kit Hadskey will have our program on shadowwork.

As co-presidents of the smocking guild chapter this year, Vivian and I were discussing how appropriate it is that our first month be National Smocking Month!

We are excited about the scheduled programs for this year and look forward to learning new ideas. We would like to encourage everyone to bring a friend to the meeting. We are discussing ways to increase membership – and we would love some input! Also- if there is any program you would like to see us have or do, please let us know.

Our condolences go out to Kittie and Bobby Hadskey on the death of Bobby’s father. Please keep them in your prayers.

Hopefully we are all working on a Wee Care gown for National Smocking Month!

Please remember to bring your local MASG dues of $15. You can also mail them directly to Susan Batson. Also please remember to pay your National Dues by going to the Smocking Arts Guild of America website http://www.smocking.org/. You can pay SAGA online or download a form to mail.

Program

Kit Hadskey will have our program. We will be working on a small white linen square with a single letter monogram in shadowwork. The only supplies needed to bring will be a 4-5 in hoop and sharp pencil or fine blue marker. Either is fine. Small embroidery scissors. She will provide the rest of kit. Ott light and magnification, if possible!

Wee Care Gowns Workday– 4^th Tuesday of Each Month from January – October

Mark your calendar! Our next Wee Care Workday (9:30 – 2:00) will be February 23, 2016 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church (Poplar Pike). Please make plans to come for all or part of the day - it would be a great help. We need folks to bring sewing machines to sew the outfits that have been pinned.

Susan: Cotton baby blankets – I made 13 to send with a friend working this week at an orphanage in Haiti. Great use for some of my stash!

Sew Classic For Children – Facebook - Sew Classic for Children is a group for all levels of sewing children's clothing. We love classic, tailored and heirloom designs. Share your Children's Corner Pattern creations along with your comments. In addition we are delighted to answer questions.

Classic Sewing Magazine Group - Facebook…..Classic Sewing will have 132 pages of glorious sewing ideas, patterns, tips, techniques and will include at least two full size patterns in each quarterly issue. The magazine will feature heirloom and everyday sewing projects to delight the most discriminating sewist. Patterns will come in a separate envelope along with the magazine. Happy New Year Ladies!!

I hope everyone had a nice quiet New Year's!! We have turned the corner and started a new year that somehow always makes me want to start new projects!!! Now, instead of making a resolution this year, I just made a promise to myself to work on things I wanted for me!! I haven't done the embroidery I've wanted to do, machine or hand. Infant Day gowns that I've wanted to make, maybe even think about a Christening Gown!!!

For Christmas my sister Diane gave me a book called "The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up." Now, I must admit I could have been annoyed with her for a minute, thinking to myself "REALLY Diane??" But I realized I really, really want to apply this to my sewing room. I think with our speaker and reading this book could motivate me. Maybe. At least I'm giving serious thought to organizing my laces ☺

On another topic, for those of you that followed me so closely with my niece Elizabeth, To date, she received her bone marrow transplant with a perfect match from her brother. On Christmas Eve, we received news from the Dr. after a spinal biopsy, that as of now she is in remission! Our Christmas Miracle!! They continue to monitor her all the time, of course, but right now there are no leukemia blasts in her blood! And weirdly enough, she now has her brothers' DNA! Thank you a thousand times for all your prayers, good thoughts, karma, et al.

Ladies, I must appeal to you to come forward and please accept the position of President for our Guild. I certainly realize that it has made its way around several times, but we are a small group and it's bound to happen! All of our other positions are secure since our officers graciously stayed. I would like a break and we certainly have very capable people to be president!

Please give this serious thought before next Tuesday as SAGA is also looking for our list of officers.

Virginia Goodwin-Gray will present the January program.
Her topic will be "Making Your Own Doll Shoes". She will demonstrate making a pair of clogs that that she designed to look like her favorite Merrells. She will provide the pattern she made to fit her 18" Heidi Ott doll but the process can be used to make shoes to fit any doll.

Timely Tips – what have you discovered?

Virginia: I made a discovery this week. I was working with a fusible interfacing and couldn't find the Teflon pressing sheet I use to protect my iron. It cast about for an alternative I thought of using parchment paper and it worked beautifully!

Judy: I just got my copy of Memphis Magazine and Kittie’s daughter and her marriage is one featured weddings of the year. Kittie and her daughter both look beautiful. I will bring my copy of the magazine in case you cannot find one yourself.

Dear Friends,

Well here we are at the end of our year! So hard to believe! I know how busy it has been for me and I'm sure it has been for you as well! I managed to survive a wedding, the re-opening of Lace Cottage, and the most emotional trip of my sweet niece Elizabeth that many of you traveled right along with me. I am glad to report that as of today, her important numbers are going up!!! First great news we've had in a long and arduous journey. She is still suffering significant side effects from the radiation, but so encouraged from the Bone marrow transplant numbers thus far, that I think she will withstand anything at this point. It never ceases to amaze me how she still never complains about her situation, but only strives to get better to be with her baby. He is doing amazing and now weighs in at a whopping 10 lbs. at 3 mos. Your thoughts and prayers were deeply appreciated by me and my family and every single one of them were passed on by me. Looking back at all she has been through, which has been so much with shock to despair to maybe hope again, sort of puts things in perspective for our own lives.

It does tend to make me want to slow down some and enjoy my friends like you and all that you bring into my life as sewing and just good friends!!! The sewing information we glean from each other is invaluable and the camaraderie is even more precious! That special connection should never be lost no matter how busy we get, as we never know when we might really need to count on each other. I am wishing you all PEACE and JOY throughout this holiday season and into 2016.

Hello Ladies,

Well Halloween is behind us but at my house, not so much the candy!! Is it so wrong to have a Butterfinger or two for breakfast?? I bet I'm not the only one!! Come on, you know who you are 😊!

Hard to believe Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away, and then OMG! Christmas!!! So some of us start getting the house organized for the holidays with sewing projects, cleaning up etc. This is a really good time to mark your calendars to attend our guild meeting on November 10^th as we have Jennifer Gammill visiting us to help us get our sewing rooms organized. Something I can sure use help with. I would love to have a large crowd to show her our support!

Also, Lace Cottage will be having a Christmas open house on Saturday, November 14th, to show off all our adorable Christmas outfit samples we have put together for you. Let's all show our support for our small businesses that support us! ❤️

Molly, 8 year old granddaughter of Susan Batson, modeled her nightgown while we were in Baltimore last September. She is the 2nd generation to wear this gown - her mom and aunt wore it many years ago. Smocked outfits do span generations!

Kit’s Korner

Hello ladies!

Well I'm glad to say that our wedding was a complete success and is finally over! I'm slowly decompressing from all the details that stay in your head for what seems like months!! Now time for a little rest and relaxation in Florida with my sister next week. Just when we might get fall weather here, I go south?? Oh well, quality time together!!

On a sad note, I wanted to share with our sewing family that our own Rose Smit underwent a long and arduous 10 hour heart surgery Monday week ago. There was extensive damage and many repairs were necessary. She will be unable to continue to work at Lace Cottage for the remainder of the year, so we will need to double up on our schedules. She is still in the hospital now, but hopefully will be home soon. Her family is close around her and we need to keep them and her in our prayers.

The Lace Cottage family asks for your patience as we figure out our schedules on classes Rose was teaching. Thank you in advance!

See you in November and don't forget our guest speaker Jennifer Gammil is coming!!

Our program will be presented by Debbie Clark on making a selvage needlecase. . Debbie’s program will be mostly demonstration. You will need to bring:

Selvages ironed and pressed. (We will be covering a 9 ½ x 10 ½ inch piece of muslin.)
Paper scissors
Regular scissors

Refreshments will be provided by Phyllis.

Please bring in any finished (or unfinished) Wee Care gowns and be prepared to take home some new ones! Our next Wee Care workday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church (Poplar Pike) will be Tuesday, October 27th from 9:30 am – 2:00 pm. Our next Wee Care Workday will be January 26, 2016.

News from our Librarian, Glynda Whitlow

Over the years MASG has invested in quality French handsewing and smocking books for member's use. They are now treasures, so many are out of print. This is a valuable resource for Guild members.

Kitty taught the "honeycomb" stitch at our September meeting. It is an advanced stitch. Did you struggle getting it just prefect? A-Z of Smocking has step by step picture directions. Did you know there are 2 honeycomb smocking stitches? Check this book out to help you with your pleating and smocking techniques.

Coming Soon---the new Creative Stitching Magazine!! Hope to have it by Dec. 8. Someone may take it home and enjoy it over the holidays.

Tag blankets – Susan Batson. My husband and I made these 2 tag blankets for our son-in-law’s sister who is expecting a son in November. Bob prepared and pinned the variety of ribbons while I stitched the layers (fleece front and minki-dot back).
