VaP (Vivian and Phyllis) Vibes

Happy September everyone!  We are definitely gearing up for the holiday season at Lace Cottage.  Our September calendar has classes on the new Children’s Corner patterns and we have lots of knit fabrics in the shop.  We also have begun to receive the new Christmas fabrics in the shop.  I would like to start my projects now so I am not rushing around at the last minute.  I just need a push form Vivian to hold me accountable.

I am excited to let everyone know that the date of November 5th has been booked for an outing to Whitney Hills Estate.  Now we just need ideas for our sewing project for the day- maybe a Christmas project?  Regina at Whitney Hills is planning a very special lunch for us that day.  Mark your calendars!  Hope everyone can make it!
See you Tuesday!

Have you checked out the Chapter Chatter? We are pictured on page 7, 2nd column, with our display at the Germantown Library How To Festival last May. Thanks so much, Dianne, for submitting our “chatter”. We look forward to more features, as well as a SAGA Correspondent as a new officer in 2017. This will let others know we are an active chapter with service to others!

Susan Batson:

Please check your stash for 1 yard or ½ yard pieces of cotton print, colorful fabric. Why? Our sewing ministry at Covenant UMC – Stitches of Hope – is sewing smocks for the nannies at an orphanage in Haiti. One of our church members regularly goes there for a week in mission. There are about 30 nannies who use 2 smocks per year. We have about 25 smocks to send next week with her, but need to make many more smocks for her next mission trip in January.

Please bring the fabric to our meeting, or I can arrange to pick it up at Lace Cottage. Want to help us sew the smocks? Just let me know and I’ll get you started!

Did you know:

Every Wednesday from 9:30 – 11:30 at Lord of Life Church we have a group of ladies who “sit and smock”? They have been meeting many years, and Jane Soffos is the smocking guru/mentor to answer your questions. This group is open to anyone who needs some one-on-one time with smocking projects. Come join us!

Calling all 2ET and 3ET Wee Care Gowns!

If you are an Extra Extra Tiny or an Extra, Extra, Extra Tiny gown and have been patiently waiting for your smocker to finish you – take heart! There is motivation for her smocking in this urgent message. We have recently filled a hospital order and have sent almost all of our gowns to our littlest angels. So.o.o.o.o we need to quickly replenish our supply of our tiniest gowns. (Our larger gowns would love some company also!) Please let your smocker know that she can either leave you at Lace Cottage or bring you to our next MASG meeting. It will be such fun to join your other 2ET and 3ET gown “friends” again! Thank you so much!

Greetings, Ladies!

I love this time of year, (not because it is 100+ degrees outside) but because there is excitement in the air for ‘Back to School’. Everyone from a child ready to begin kindergarten, high school, college, or even us moms!  We get new backpacks, clothes, books, computers, and school supplies. We are busy getting ready for soccer, football and college game days!  There is always something you can sew, embroider, or smock to make them feel special from sweet dresses with school-themed and sports-themed smocking, pillows, to a nap-mat.  I have always loved seeing how excited the children are to meet their teachers and get back to seeing their school friends.

We are busy at Lace Cottage this month getting with new fabrics and classes with the new Children’s Corner patterns, embroidery, smocking, crochet and sewing.  There are even new smocking plates to try out.  As always, Sit & Smock is on Thursday evenings.  It is a great time to work on some back to school items or Wee Care gowns.  Please come join us for the fun.

Thank you Susan for reminding us about our Wee Care gowns and thanks to Regina and Jane for organizing us and keeping us on track!

See you Tuesday!

July, 2016

Our monthly meeting will be Tuesday, July 12 at 6:30 pm (note earlier time). All are welcome! Please join us! Bring a friend! Our program will be our annual salad dinner – a fun, yummy night is planned!

VaP (Vivian and Phyllis) Vibes

So the year is officially halfway over!  How many of your projects have you finished?  Over the holiday weekend I was working on a Christmas outfit for my grandson and my daughter says, “What did you make for his 2nd Birthday outfit?”  Hmm…Since his birthday is next week, we are just making a Johnny with a monogram on it. Lace Cottage is working on Christmas outfits now and I am just so ready to get more than two outfits done for him.
The Christmas projects for Lace Cottage will be displayed in the store beginning in August.  It seems like Christmas is far away, but this year is going by so quickly.  Our calendar is steadily increasing with the number of classes we are having as well as the variety!  We are proud to have 2 sessions of sewing Kids Camp this year!  Hopefully, our young sewers will continue their interest in sewing.  We welcome your project ideas to help us do this.
As we continue into the second half of the year, (which I expect to go by quicker than the first half) I have so many ideas I want to work on – from back-to-school, football game outfits, and then moving right into the holidays of Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas!  Since it is so hot outside right now- I can just stay inside and work on some of these.
As much as I usually think I have accomplished in a day, there is always my sewing room to go to and see just what things I have left undone.  How many unfinished projects do you have?
See you Tuesday!

For those of you who had the chance to attend the Germantown Library How-To workshop  on May 21st, thank you for helping out! We had a good showing at our table.  The traffic was steady and we had quite a bit of interest in our presentation.  Thank you Susan for organizing this event for us and getting our booth set up with such a variety of smocking! Thanks to Diane, Kittie, Carolyn, Shawn, Sara, Virginia and Vivian for working the event and sharing your beautiful handwork!
Now that school is out, it is time to work on some special projects you have been trying to finish.  Lace Cottage has a full calendar in June with classes and “Kid’s Camp”.  We are also planning our “Christmas in July” so that those of you who have finished old projects can get started on Christmas outfits!  We will have Christmas fabrics, basics, and our smocking plates stocked up – come join us.
Following up on a fall event for all of us to attend, I have reached out to Barbara with Whitney Hills Estate.  This sounds like such fun!  You can check out their website at www.whitneyhillsestates.com and see the house with the barn for activities and the beautiful grounds.  The estate is only about an hour away and would be a great place to have a ‘Day Retreat’.  Now we should try to find a project to make that day.  Any ideas are welcome!
I am ready for the Button Scissor Fob program on Tuesday!

Just thinking about all of the events we have had over the past month and will continue into May - what a busy time of year!  First Communions, Easter, graduations and the end of the school year!  Time for summer clothing!  Lace Cottage has been busy with scalloped shorts classes and some summer bubbles!  We are planning our kids sewing camp for the summer.  In fact.... Vivian has even mentioned the 'C' word!!  Christmas in July?  We will be working on it.

In the meantime...I am looking into a couple of places we might want to take either a day trip or an overnight sewing trip.  I hope to have some options at the meeting next week.  Bring your calendars and hopefully we can pick a Saturday.  See you Tuesday.

Phyllis

Program:

Our program will be given by Sarah Schwab. The program will be A Little Onesie Gift.  Make a quick and inexpensive newborn gift using a knit onesie.  The onesie will be provided.
Please bring:
embroidery needle,
your choice of color of DMC floss,
scissors,
magnifier if needed and
anything else you regularly use for sewing
We will NOT be adding a skirt during the meeting, but she will be talking us through the steps.  So we might want to coordinate our floss colors with our fabric.   We will need about 32x18 inches for the skirt.

Save the Date!  Germantown Library How-To Festival – Saturday, May 21st – 1:00 – 4:00 pm

We have a unique opportunity this month to show others what we smockers do – for our family, friends, and hospitals! We have been invited to be an exhibitor at the annual Germantown Library How-To Festival on Saturday, May 21 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Germantown Library is at Exeter and Farmington. We have space for 2 long tables for display and demonstration. Our reserved location is just to the right of the double door entry along the front hall. (No outside weather to worry our hands!) We need to sign up at our meeting for a period of time to “sit and smock” and to answer questions of interested onlookers. (We will be added to the update of this flyer.) What a wonderful opportunity to share our art with the local community!
