December, 2016

Our monthly meeting will be Tuesday, December 13th at 6:00 pm. (Please note time change for our Christmas Party.)  All are welcome! Please join us! We will meet at Sarah Schwab’s home (2670 Brook Bridge Cove, Gtn, 38138)
for a fun evening! Please check the food list below.

VaP (Vivian and Phyllis) Vibes

As I decorate my home for Christmas, I pull out all of the ‘old’ decorations and always add some ‘new’ things I have found.  I love looking at the ornaments I made as a child, the ones my children made and now the ones my grandson has made – and YES – they are on the main tree.  I love looking at the memories and reflect on the time and love that went into making them.  When people ask me if I have a ‘theme’ tree I say “Yes – the theme is…old”.

It is this time of year that I think, as hand-crafters, we reflect on what we can give, make, or do for someone else.  It is not always about the buying – but the giving. The Christmas dresses, boy outfits, towels, even decorations that I have seen from all of the ladies in the guild gives me such joy to know that each of you is very talented and appreciates the time and love that goes into your work.  My children are older now and have their own homes to decorate.  I just love it when they ask where they can ‘buy’ something I made!  I like it even better when they ask me to make them one!

I hope this holiday season brings each of you joy and peace!
See you Tuesday!
Phyllis

Susan:The Dressmaker of Khair Khana – a wonderful read!
I found this at the Germantown Community Library and couldn’t put it down! Inspirational and true!
The life Kamila Sidiqi had known changed overnight when the Taliban seized control of the city of Kabul. After receiving a teaching degree during the civil war—a rare achievement for any Afghan woman—Kamila was subsequently banned from school and confined to her home. When her father and brother were forced to flee the city, Kamila became the sole breadwinner for her five siblings. Armed only with grit and determination, she picked up a needle and thread and created a thriving business of her own.

The Dressmaker of Khair Khana tells the incredible true story of this unlikely entrepreneur who mobilized her community under the Taliban. Former ABC News reporter Gayle Tzemach Lemmon spent years on the ground reporting Kamila's story, and the result is an unusually intimate and unsanitized look at the daily lives of women in Afghanistan. These women are not victims; they are the glue that holds families together; they are the backbone and the heart of their nation.

Calling all 2ET and 3ET Wee Care Gowns!

If you are an Extra Extra Tiny or an Extra, Extra, Extra Tiny gown and have been patiently waiting for your smocker to finish you – take heart! There is motivation for her smocking in this urgent message. We have recently filled a hospital order and have sent almost all of our gowns to our littlest angels. So.o.o.o.o we need to quickly replenish our supply of our tiniest gowns. (Our larger gowns would love some company also!) Please let your smocker know that she can either leave you at Lace Cottage or bring you to our next MASG meeting. It will be such fun to join your other 2ET and 3ET gown “friends” again! Thank you so much!

Wow!  We just got home from our trip to Houston for the International Quilt Market last weekend.  What a fun and exhausting trip!  We found some new vendors for fabric and notions as well as new products we will be carrying in Lace Cottage. Just so you know- this handcrafted work is alive and well!  There were well over 500 vendors in the Exhibit Hall and we saw every one of them.
As we enter November I reflect on what I am thankful for before I get too busy cooking and cleaning for Thanksgiving Day.  I am very thankful for getting to know each of you in the Smocking Guild, thankful for always learning new sewing/smocking tips and tricks, and thankful for your friendship.  I hope that each of you has a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving.  God bless.
See you Tuesday!

1. Repurpose those stray adult knee socks to make a pair of tights for your 18" doll!

2. Have a pair of doll shoes with a colored insole that stains your pretty white doll socks? Draw around the sole on card stock and insert into the shoe to check for fit. Cover front and back of the card stock with clear packaging tape and trim off the excess. Slip into the doll shoe and, VoilĂ , no more stained socks!

I find it hard to believe we are already in October of this year.  With the weather still being too warm outside, it is hard to be thinking of Thanksgiving and Christmas but it is that time of year.  Lace Cottage has Christmas fabric and the new Christmas plates in stock.  We even have some ‘pre-smocked’ Christmas inserts and Christmas trims to save time! Our calendar is filled with new classes as well as some basic ones- and we have Sit and Sew every Monday if you would like to just come enjoy company while you finish your project.

Request from Susan:

Please check your stash for 1 yard or ½ yard pieces of cotton print, colorful fabric. Why? Our sewing ministry at Covenant UMC – Stitches of Hope – is sewing smocks for the nannies at an orphanage in Haiti. One of our church members regularly goes there for a week in mission. There are about 30 nannies who use 2 smocks per year. We sent about 25 smocks in September, but need to make many more smocks for her next mission trip in January.

Please bring the fabric to our meeting, or I can arrange to pick it up at Lace Cottage. Want to help us sew the smocks? Just let me know and I’ll get you started!

Happy September everyone!  We are definitely gearing up for the holiday season at Lace Cottage.  Our September calendar has classes on the new Children’s Corner patterns and we have lots of knit fabrics in the shop.  We also have begun to receive the new Christmas fabrics in the shop.  I would like to start my projects now so I am not rushing around at the last minute.  I just need a push form Vivian to hold me accountable.

I am excited to let everyone know that the date of November 5th has been booked for an outing to Whitney Hills Estate.  Now we just need ideas for our sewing project for the day- maybe a Christmas project?  Regina at Whitney Hills is planning a very special lunch for us that day.  Mark your calendars!  Hope everyone can make it!

Greetings, Ladies!

I love this time of year, (not because it is 100+ degrees outside) but because there is excitement in the air for ‘Back to School’. Everyone from a child ready to begin kindergarten, high school, college, or even us moms!  We get new backpacks, clothes, books, computers, and school supplies. We are busy getting ready for soccer, football and college game days!  There is always something you can sew, embroider, or smock to make them feel special from sweet dresses with school-themed and sports-themed smocking, pillows, to a nap-mat.  I have always loved seeing how excited the children are to meet their teachers and get back to seeing their school friends.

We are busy at Lace Cottage this month getting with new fabrics and classes with the new Children’s Corner patterns, embroidery, smocking, crochet and sewing.  There are even new smocking plates to try out.  As always, Sit & Smock is on Thursday evenings.  It is a great time to work on some back to school items or Wee Care gowns.  Please come join us for the fun.

Thank you Susan for reminding us about our Wee Care gowns and thanks to Regina and Jane for organizing us and keeping us on track!

See you Tuesday!
